As part of a consultation exercise on the future of Interreg European Territorial Cooperation Programmes, Irene McMaster presented an assessment of the evolution of over 30 years of EU territorial cooperation programmes and cooperation through the Northern Periphery and Arctic (NPA) Programme. The presentation noted the evolution of cooperation in the NPA area from an ad hoc collaboration arrangement to a well-established programme delivering tangible results for remote and peripheral communities. While the context for cooperation has changed substantially over successive programme periods, the programmes’ focus on the needs of remote and peripheral regions and the added value of cooperation remain critically important for the future.
