Webinar on Energy Poverty Data and Policies in the EU

The fourth EPRC webinar of 2023 was held on 24 May (11:00 – 12:00 UK) over Zoom. Giorgos Koukoufikis, Project Leader at the Joint Research of the European Commission, presented on “From Niche to Mainstream – Energy poverty data and policies in the EU”.

As an increasing share of the population across the European Union (EU) is suffering from energy poverty the topic has been on the top of political and academic agendas over the last few years. The effects of the pandemic and geopolitical turbulence are visible in higher energy costs and weak economic performance. This signals a reversal of a trend of energy poverty that in 2020 started to increase in the EU after 7 years of negative adaptations. Tackling this requires a better understanding of the social groups and territories affected most as well as relevant policy action.

In this webinar, Koukoufikis discussed what the Joint Research Centre and the Commission are doing on the issue, and provided insights on the latest data and energy poverty indicators available.

Giorgos Koukoufikis is a Project Leader at the Joint Research of the European Commission, where he is managing the project Just and Empowering Transition in energy and transport. Prior, he was involved in energy communities’ research in Greece and was a Policy Advisor at the European Parliament. He holds a PhD in urban studies from the Gran Sasso Science Institute (L’Aquila, Italy) where he explored the impacts of the socioeconomic crisis on urban socioecological transformations.

Giorgo’s presentation can be accessed here, and the webinar recording can be viewed on the EPRC’s YouTube page here.

Future EPRC webinars will delve into sustainability, regional policy and development topics.
